Bedminster's guide to great coffee.

Ah, coffee. Most of us can’t go a day without getting our daily dose of caffeine, and whether your go to order is a frappuccino, oat milk latte, or the classic black americano; Bedminster is full of great places to get that caffeine fix.

With each one offering something different and unique, let’s take a tour of Bedminster’s coffee scene and maybe find our new favourite drink… just not all on the same day!

EAST STREET & BEDMINSTER PARADE

Krakus.

If you’re really after something different to switch up your morning coffee routine, then why not head on down to Krakus on Bedminster Parade. This Polish Deli is jam-packed full of amazing snacks and treats, so you may just be popping in for a quick coffee, but you might just come up with your weekly shop.

Grounded.

This just might be the perfect place to visit with the family! Grounded Cafe loves to have families come and visit them, and they even have toys, games, and colouring books to keep your little ones occupied while you relax and sip on your morning latte in comfort.

City Farm Cafe.

Who doesn’t like to pet some farm animals after drinking a flat white? This may not be the one for your coffee on the go, but certainly one to take the family and friends for a well-deserved day out! After an afternoon of exploring the gardens and meeting the animals, set yourself up on a picnic table and recharge your batteries.

The Toast Room.

Toast is just as much a morning necessity as coffee, and that’s exactly what you’re gonna get here! Avocado on toast, sourdough toasties or some breakfast hash, they’ve got it all. From breakfast to brunch, The Toast Room is the perfect place to start your day.

Eddies Coffee Lounge.

If you don’t know Eddie’s Coffee Lounge, then where have you been? There’s nothing quite like the smell of freshly ground coffee to wake you up in the morning, and that’s exactly what you’ll get. Each day, Eddie roasts and grinds his coffee in the back of his shop and my gosh it smells divine!

Sunshine Cafe.

No faff, no fluff. Just good classic coffee served with a smile. This East Street institution has been serving the locals of Bedminster their daily coffee and fry ups for so many years, we can’t imagine the high street without it!

George’s Cafe.

Another of East Street’s longest serving breakfast spots, and for such great value. We’re talking about your classic breakfast menus and good strong teas and coffees to go with it.

Hippie Flower Cafe.

Cafe by day, restaurant by night! The Hippie Flower Cafe is beautifully decorated with plants and has an incredible menu that will see you starting the day with your morning Americano and ending your evening with a silky latte.

VX Vegan Cafe.

For any peanut butter lovers out there, VX is for you! The vegan junk food cafe is not only the place to get a mac and cheese burrito or a Vego Monster shake, but it’s also home to the peanut butter latte! And there’s no need to ask because everything is 100% vegan.

WEST STREET

The Fix.

Get your daily fix… at The Fix! Their goal is to actually provide customers with their daily fix of coffee and put a smile on their face. This wonderful little cafe is part of Trained by BV on West Street, and so they’re not only serving up coffees, but they’re whizzing up some post work-out shakes and some tasty treats in the kitchen.

Mezzaluna.

An authentic Italian restaurant, bar and cafe right here on West Street, you should make this your place to grab some dessert and coffee while you catch up with some friends. We highly recommend the tiramisu… it’s delicious!

NORTH STREET

Sweven.

These guys really know their stuff. From filter to espresso, you will be able to discover new flavours, blends, and origins with a regularly updated coffee menu that will definitely keep you coming back for more. Sweven is cool, calm and has a counter full of amazing cakes for you to sit back, relax and truly enjoy your coffee experience.

Albatross Cafe.

A beautiful independent cafe, Albatross is serving up locally roasted coffee alongside locally baked cakes and a delicious seasonal menu. With pink and blue neon lights and so many indoor plants, it’s definitely a hot spot for an Instagram moment!

Hennessey’s Coffee Shop.

The place to get your coffee in the most colourful crockery! One of Bedminster’s oldest coffee shops, Hennessey’s is a true staple to North Street’s coffee scene. Always a delicous cake to be had as well as some incredible fresh baguettes.

Hennessey Coffee Bedminster Coffee

Flip.

Coming through for all your vegan needs. When all you want is a croissant and a coffee in the morning, Flip has got you covered. We challenge you to not come out with a full bag full of goodies after sipping on your morning Americano.

The Lounge.

One of Bedminster’s top destination spots for meeting with friends and grabbing some lunch. What we love about The Lounge is the coziness of its interiors and the amazing outdoor seating that it has - making it one of our go-to coffee spots on a beautiful summer’s day.

Tincan.

Did you know that Tincan have their own locally roasted and seasonal espresso blends? It’s good for both your morning commute to work or for grabbing a coffee with friends. And did we mention their incredible food menu? Sourdough toasties and bao buns? Yes please.

Savana Coffee.

What we’ve got here is the perfect spot for people-watching. There’s really no better place to perch with your afternoon latte than at Savana’s. On a sunny day, you need to head on down and watch the hustle and bustle of North Street pass you by.

Mark’s Bread.

The award-winning Mark’s Bread, which is now under new ownership, is definitely the place to be if you like to have your morning brew with a huge toastie or sandwich. We cannot even begin to describe how good this place is. What’s really great about this place is that you can take home old coffee grounds to use for compost! Sustainability at its finest!

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO CAMPING!

Camping season is upon us, and we’re here to help you prepare with our handy essentials guide. Jam-packed with top tips and camping essentials to make the most out of your trips this year, and we’ve also got Taunton Leisure right here on our doorstep to grab some equipment.

1 - TENT

First things first, you’re going to need a tent, and depending on what type of campaign you’re going to be doing, Taunton Leisure can help you find the perfect tent for your trip. A few things to remember when choosing your tent is:

  • Make sure there’s enough space for you...and your kit!

  • Don’t forget the groundsheet

  • Tent weight and how you’ll transport it

  • Choose 3000mm Hydrostatic Head MINIMUM! - this is a gauge of how well waterproofed your tent is. 3000mm is widely considered the base level.

2 - PACK

A good pack can make all the difference to your camping trip.

You might be carrying everything you need for a trip on your back, or you might just be looking to put everything into a duffle bag or holdall, ready for the car boot!

If it’s the first… make sure you go into the store and speak to the team on getting a well fitted pack. An ill-fitted one can really ruin your trip!

3 - SLEEPING BAG

Even though the weather may be getting a little warmer, you’re still going to want a good quality sleeping bag as it still gets pretty chilly at night.  Pay important attention to the temperate rating of your bag.

This will come in three measurements; Comfort, Limit & Extreme

Comfort: This is the temperature the sleeping bag should ideally be used in to provide adequate warmth and comfort to the camper, and the best night's sleep.

Limit: The limit is the lower limit of temperature that the sleeping bag should be used in. The sleeping bag should not really be used in colder temperatures than the Limit Rating.

Extreme: The Extreme Rating, is the temperature that a person would "survive" the night in the sleeping bag, but not sleep or be in any comfort at all. The sleeping bag should only be used in this temperature as a last resort or emergency.

4 - WATER CONTAINERS

There’s a lot of options at your disposal here as water containers come in all shapes and sizes. Nalgene bottles and hydration bladders are ideal for solo trekkers, larger containers and wheeled units are ideal for big family trips and car camping!

Image from Taunton Leisure website

Image from Taunton Leisure website

5 - FIRST AID

It’s always best to be prepared; even for minor injuries! A well-stocked first-aid kit is a must. Particularly if you’re out in the wild.

6 - CAMPING STOVE

A good stove is going to make or break a trip. Small super light models are available if you’re scrimping on weight. Or you can get bigger pieces of kit that are better suited to family trips on campsites.

Whatever stove you get, it’s important to make sure you have the right gas and fittings to go with. Not all gas canisters and stoves work with each other, so ask in store to be absolutely sure!

Also, if you’re opting for a lightweight stove, don’t forget to pick up a wind baffle… it’ll make life so much easier!

7 - POTS AND PANS

Whether you’re going solo in the wilderness or camping with the family, you’re going to need some pots and pans!   The options are wide open; from classic Trangias, full family crockery sets through to the humble billy can. But at the end of the day, the choice is yours.

Image from Taunton Leisure wesbite

8 - LIGHT

Something you don’t want to forget is a light or lantern for the night times in the tent. The last thing you want is an awkward late night trip to the loo in the dark, or getting caught on a hike as the sun begins to drop.

The most crucial bit of equipment is a good bright head torch, with plenty of spare batteries. Or a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, if that’s what you’d prefer.

But remember if you are taking a rechargeable torch, you might want to consider picking up a portable charger… if you’re going to be away from the mains for a while!

9 -  THE RIGHT CLOTHING

There’s no such thing as bad weather… only inappropriate clothing!

Starting at the bottom, a good pair of boots is a must. You can opt for leather or synthetic, the choice is yours. But we’d advise coming in for a proper fitting first. You’re also going to need a few paris of good socks!

Good sturdy trousers, combined with a pair of waterproof overtrousers will have you prepared for anything. You can also go for some thermal underwear or leggings.

For the top half, layering is the key to keeping snug. Baselayer, mid-layer, and outer, if things get a little toasty, you can always take one off!

Image from Taunton Leisure website

Image from Taunton Leisure website

10 - EXTRA TENT PEGS

Probably the most important thing to remember for any camping trip is EXTRA PEGS! Sometimes things just get lost or the weather takes a bit of turn, and you don’t want to be in a position where you don’t have enough pegs to secure your tent.

With 20+ businesses already signed up to wearebs3.co.uk, the platform is quickly growing into a hub for traders to move their business online, easily and for FREE.

Our team is on hand to give technical support during set-up and ongoing throughout use, with security and upgrades, as well as managing all hosting and running costs.

With a comprehensive ecommerce solution supporting sales, collections and deliveries as well as a back-end app to help with product management, route planning, collection and delivery logistics and order management it couldn’t be easier to get your shop online today.

Open For Business

Whilst you may not be able to visit our traders in person, behind closed doors they’re working hard to offer click and collect and online services to keep giving you a taste for independent shopping during lock-down.

This Christmas, it is more important than ever to shop local and support our high-street heroes. Whether you’re looking for a Christmas gift, food for the cupboards or something to keep the kids entertained, the BS3 community will have something for you.

With a handful of essential businesses staying open for business as usual, you can still get your food fix from FLIP, Zero Green, East Street Fruit Market, ALDI + a number of others, whilst your computer can still be serviced at Compuwave and pharmacy’s are open as usual.

The majority of others have adapted to offer takeaway or click and collect services, with an incredible 35 food and drink traders offering takeaway to satisfy those Friday afternoon coffee boosts and cake cravings, and over 50 traders have switched to online shopping for all your Christmas shopping.

You can view the full shop directory with details of their offerings here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1uWp5nAO0o8JyK_wDLSJvqvIZzQ5znYCZw9xVA6GNl24/edit?ts=5fa3bdc4#gid=994622950

East Street Pocket Park

A transformation has taken place on East Street as the Bedminster BID, Juniper Homes, Purcell Architects and local artist Hasan Kamill have come together to create a colourful, creative pocket park in the heart of the community.

Located on Church Road, opposite the East Street Fruit Market, the park has been fitted with benches, planters and art, creating a haven on the high street for the community.

Funding for the transformation came from the central government’s ‘Pocket Parks: helping communities transform unloved, neglected or derelict areas into new green spaces’ initiative, as well as a donation from Juniper Homes.

In line with the community’s colourful and sustainable reputation, artist Hasan Kamill has added a unique splash of colour with some bright, upcycled bins that have been repurposed as planters.

The project is the result of two years of collaborative working between community organisations and the architects to transform an underused area and create much needed rest spaces for the older generations visiting East Street for shopping.

This is the second wave of funding granted to the Bedminster community to regenerate urban green spaces, following the successful development of the Ebenezer Pocket Park on North Street over five years ago.

Eat Out to Help Out in BS3

2) Don’t Get Got from Toyville (£19.99)

The perfect gift for the trickster dad!
