Tomorrow marks the beginning of BFC 2019 and this year some of our favourite Bedminster venues are getting involved so be sure to head down and see what is going on.

The event runs from 12th – 23rd June and will see people visiting the street to stamp their food passport and taste some of the finest Bedminster has to offer!

Cleaner Bedminster Street Project

The Bedminster BID is working with the Bristol City Council to try and improve the appearance of the retails streets in the city. One initiative about to begin is graffiti removal training for local volunteer residents.

Two courses are available, the Certified Course is four hours long and the Introductory Course is 90 minutes long. Each volunteer will leave with a kit relevant to the course they’ve taken.

The following training sessions are available:

Tuesday 11 June: 4.00pm-8.00pm- Certified Course (11 places available), City Hall

Wednesday 12 June: 10.00am-2.00pm- Certified Course (11 places available), TBC

Wyldwood Arts: Playing Together @ Tobacco Factory Theatres

Break the Cycle @ Ashton Gate

Returning for its ninth year, Break the Cycle is a charity bike ride that raises money for Bristol Sport’s family of charities. More than 250 cyclists will suit up and complete one of three routes (40 miles, 65 miles, 100 miles) for an unforgettable day of cycling around our beautiful city and supporting an amazing cause.

Thali

Thali started as a food truck at Glastonbury and brings India’s amazing flavours to a small restaurant on North Street. Thali strives to ‘do more with less’ and prides itself on being sustainable and using seasonal and local ingredients to minimise their impact on the environment.

CALLING BEMMIE DESIGNERS!

This summer, the Bedminster BID will release a new tote bag that will be available in your favourite Bemmie businesses. The tote will represent what it means to live, work and play in Bedminster. We’re looking for local designers to make their mark on this new tote and create a design that shows Bedminster’s passion, community spirit and independence.

The winning design will appear on at least 2000 tote bags, distributed around the area and will help Bedminster become more sustainable in our bid to reduce the usage of plastic bags for shopping in the area!

The Brief:

Design a logo to be printed on the Bedminster BID’s tote bags that exemplifies Bedminster’s local, independent, community spirit.

Design must haves:

• Be related to Bedminster, showcasing its original Bristol spirit

• Help the tote to be a must have item for shoppers in Bedminster

• 3 colours only

• 280mm x 260mm

Timeline:

9 June: Deadline for submissions

11 June: Short List of finalists announced via social media

13 June: Winner announced!  

Money Talks:

The successful artist will receive a £300 payment, once the design is submitted, the Bedminster BID will cover the cost of printing and distribution of the tote bags. The artist will be profiled on the BID website and social media channels, with the tote being featured on at least 2000 bags in the area.

Ready to Enter?

Submit a high res file of your design to bedminster@weareplaster.com by 11.59pm Sunday 9 June 2019, with any accompanying rationale or background on yourself and your inspiration.

The small print:

1. Contest is only open to residents of the United Kingdom who are at least 18 years old on the date that they submit the entry.

2. Entries that have been completed by a third party, are illegible or are plagiarised will not be considered.

3. By submitting your entry and any accompanying material, you agree that, in the event that you are the winner of the competition, you waive all intellectual property rights with full title guarantee to your entry over to the Bedminster BID.

4. The Bedminster BID will process information about you in accordance to current GDPR standards. Once the winner is decided on all information will be destroyed and none will be passed on to any third party organisations.

5. If you are a short-listed finalist or the winner, you agree that the Bedminster BID may use your name in all announcements in relation to this design contest.

6. Short listed finalists  will be selected by the members of the Bedminster BID board, with the winner selected by online and social media votes in the BID social media channels.

Face of the High Street: Georgia & Charlotte- Ivory Flowers & Olive Tree Beauty

Running a business alongside a friend sounds about as close to ‘The Dream’ as you can get and that’s exactly what Charlotte and Georgia are doing in their wonderful shop on North Street, home to both Olive Tree Beauty and Ivory Flowers. Charlotte is the face behind Olive Tree Beauty, Georgia heads up Ivory Flowers and together, they’re taking on the wild world of business ownership.

The two grew up as neighbours on Raleigh Road and love calling Bedminster home, so made sense to build their careers in this amazing community. Georgia and Charlotte have seen the area expand and develop into an incredible place to live and do business. They spoke of how nicely the new has complemented the traditional and how the community feel has never gone away. They feel supported by their fellow business owners in the area and love that they can walk down the street and recognise the customers they’ve developed such an amazing relationship with.

Georgia began working at Ivory Flowers when was starting out as a florist. At the time the shop was owned by Xanthe Ivory who, 18 months ago, decided she would be selling the business after the birth of her child.  Seizing the opportunity to own her own business, Georgia began learning the ins and outs of business management from Xanthe, who trained her to eventually take over the business at the end of last summer.

Georgia got into floristry a bit by chance. She was studying sociology at UWE when a family friend organised a two-week work experience for her at their shop. After those two weeks, Georgia was all in. She left university to begin learning the trade and building her career, all of which eventually led her to North Street and Ivory Flowers.

Ivory Flowers has always had another business share the space, up until last summer it was Zara’s Chocolates who has since expanded into a bigger shop further down North Street. When the space opened up, Georgia was quick to get in touch with Charlotte, whose beauty therapy business was the perfect fit.

Charlotte trained as a massage therapist when she left school and has since received qualifications in reflexology, waxing and threading to round out her beauty therapy offerings. She was working at the Clifton Lido when Georgia came to her with the idea to open up her own business with her on North Street.

It’s been an amazing nine months for Charlotte; with future plans to extend her offering, hire an employee and maybe expand into some extra space at the back of the shop, she doesn’t seem to be slowing down either.

Charlotte and Georgia are a new breed of business partner, running two separate businesses side-by-side, both selling very different products but having each other to work with and be supported by. It’s the direction a lot of small, young businesses are moving in, choosing to opt for a co-working environment rather than being completely on their own. We’re happy to see this kind of collaboration happening in Bedminster, too. This option gives small businesses the opportunity to be on the high street and develop their brands together.

Face of the High Street: Barcan + Kirby

It’s been a big month for the team at Barcan + Kirby, a new North Street office and a Bristol Life Award, how impressive is that?!

What’s more impressive is the team behind this month’s major accomplishments, and the many others that have been achieved on North Street and in Bristol as a whole.

Barcan + Kirby do things a little differently from all of the other high street law firms and we really enjoy that over on this side of the river.

What we love the most is how they’ve figured out that in order to deliver the best service to their clients, they need to make sure that staff are in top shape. That means mental health support, flexible working arrangements and other development programmes that ensure employees are cared for; because you can’t give from an empty cup.

The team of 36 also take part in trying to make Bedminster, and Bristol, a better place. A cause that is near to their hearts is supporting the Bristol Dementia Action Alliance in their goal of making Bristol the UK’s first dementia friendly city. This begins with every member of the staff being trained as a ‘dementia friend’ as part of their new starter on boarding. Face of the High Street: Ange- Grenville Wick

Ange Packer is Bedminster born and bred and has seen the area change from factories to foodies over the years, from the Bedminster of yesterday to what we all know so well today.

Grenville Wick is the place you go to spread joy, happy wishes, deepest sympathies or to just send a quick hello to family and friends who are maybe right next door or across the globe. Cards and small gifts fill the walls and shelves, all destined to go to someone who Ange’s guests are thinking about.

The shop opened 13 years ago and as email and social media have taken over, Grenville Wick has cracked on, connecting people and sharing in life’s milestones.

Ange talks about Bedminster with pride and even tells a story of the time that she almost moved away but thanks to for North Street, the birds on her walk to work and the neighbouring businesses she’s still here!

The shop has evolved over the years, now carrying lovely books about Bristol and a line of organic skin and hair care products. Ange speaks of how retail has changed and how the shop must change with it, providing a space for community and a place where local artists can have their work on display. Stop in and have a chat, Ange is always ready, ask about her favourite line of cards and hear that famous Bedminster ‘love’ roll right off her tongue.

Bedminster Wilko to host Great British Spring Clean community event

The chairman of the Bedminster Business Improvement District is calling on local people and businesses to ‘be part of the pick’ for the 2019 Great British Spring Clean.

Taking place on Tuesday 9 April from 12:00 – 4:00pm the Great British Spring Clean aims to improve the environment right on our doorsteps. The event is part of the nationwide initiative led by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, and aims to inspire over 500,000 volunteers from businesses, community organisations and the general public to collect and safely dispose of litter from British streets, parks and beaches.

One of the businesses involved in the 2019 Great British Spring Clean is household goods specialists Wilko and Simon Dicken, Bedminster BID chairman and store manager of the East Street Wilko, will be rolling up his sleeves to get behind this campaign.

Simon had this to day: “I am incredibly proud to support The Great British Spring Clean at a local level here in Bedminster, as well as a citywide capacity. Outside of Bedminster, the stores at Clifton, City Centre, Knowle and Avonmeads will all be getting involved in the Great British Spring Clean.

 “Wilko regional manager Sian John and talent and development officer, Emma Gravell, from the Wilko head office will be taking part and we’d love to see other local Bedminster and Bristol businesses and residents get involved on the 9th.”

Spring has arrived in Bedminster and it feels so good!

The terraces are filling up, parks are alive and we’re looking forward to spending more time outside this April and getting to know Bedminster again after a long and dark winter.

Farmcraft @ Windmill Hill City Farm

Thursday 11 April 10.00am-12.00pm, 6-10yo, £10

The folks at Windmill Hill City Farm have taken cues from the popular kids’ computer game, Minecraft and developed Farmcraft, a real life outdoor adventure session. Kids will have to collect ore, stone, wood and gold around the farm and swap for tools and equipment. Items collected can then be used to build a fire, feed an animal, make a potion or carve a walking stick. A great day outside that is sure to get the imagination going!

The Great British Spring Clean @ East Street Wilko

Tuesday 9 April, 12.00pm-4.00pm

Roll up your sleeves, Bedminster! Wilko is joining the nationwide campaign calling on local businesses, community organisations and residents to collect and safely dispose of litter from British streets, parks and beaches. Sign up to join the growing members of the business community in making East Street and other areas of Bedminster a cleaner place to enjoy the outdoors.

Face of the High Street: Alice- Trylla

There’s something about walking into a shop and feeling like you instantly know it’s owner just by what’s on display. Walking into Trylla on North Street feels just like that. The colourful clothing, carefully picked toys, beautifully handmade ceramics and the workspace in the back just scream Alice before you even have the extreme pleasure of getting to know her.

Alice grew up in Cheshire and settled in Bristol, by way of London, four years ago. From quite a creative family, Alice studied illustration in uni and always knew a creative career was on the books for her. Upon arriving in Bristol, Alice got a job at a pottery painting cafe and quickly began crafting ideas for her dream business, one that combined all of her favourite things, in her favourite part of the city.

Trylla opened on North Street in Bedminster almost a year ago and really has something for everyone; carefully curated second hand clothes line the walls while nostalgic My Little Pony and Troll toys are placed among handmade items from local makers and Alice herself. A ceramic studio and kiln live in the basement to complete the space and this creative hub.

Alice holds pottery and knitting workshops, a fortnightly open Clay Club where attendees can play as they wish and have access to clay, glazes and kiln firing for only £12 and is developing ideas of hosting birthday parties and hen dos. Trylla really is a haven of colour and creativity in Bedminster and after almost a year, we can’t wait to see what’s next!

As a special Easter activity, Alice is hosting a free paint your own egg pendant event Saturday 13 April. Book into 10 minute time slots and pick up your egg the following week in time for Easter lunch!

Face of the High Street: Annie- The Rope Walk

It isn’t long after you step into the Rope Walk and meet Annie that you realise this isn’t your typical pub and Annie is definitely not your typical pub owner.

The pub is a collection of Annie’s life, a passion project that brings together art, music, community, great food and of course, a full bar.

Annie is a North Bristol girl and her lifelong career in the hospitality industry has led her to buying the Rope Walk just over three years ago. Sceptical at first of coming south of the river, Annie hasn’t had a reason to look back.

The Rope Walk is Annie’s way of bringing her love for art, music and community together in one place. The walls of the large outdoor garden are covered in beautiful Bristolian street art while inside, a rotating exhibit of fine art is displayed among the comfortable leather chairs, wooden tables and stained glass windows.

Annie has seen Bedminster, and Bristol at that, evolve her whole life. Like most people who have grown up in Bristol, she’s excited about all of the creativity that lives in Bedminster and the evolution the area has taken over the years, and now that she’s made it across the river, she’s thrilled to be a part of the Bedminster business community and isn’t going anywhere soon.

The pub is a gathering place where anybody is welcome. With a function space that is perfect for meetings, events and anything you can think of and music events happening every week, the Rope Walk is your next favourite pub!

Face of the High Street: Ozzy - Mezzaluna

This is Ozzy, who three years ago this month took over ownership of the lively West Street Italian restaurant, Mezzaluna. Originally from Turkey, Ozzy has been in Bristol for 20 years and has fallen in love with the city’s charm. It’s easy to catch his eyes lighting up when he talks about his love for Bristol. What he loves the most is how amazing the people are and how strong the community spirit is, especially in Bedminster.  

An engineer by trade but with a past in hospitality management, Ozzy craved the connection to people that the restaurant business provided and left the engineering world to buy Mezzaluna. Over the years Ozzy has added his touch to the restaurant; a colourful interior, a menu full of delicious Italian classics of pasta and pizza and a garden seating area that is second to none.

Alongside Ozzy, at the heart of the restaurant, is an incredible team of staff. Most of them have been at Mezzaluna for over two years and are a tight-knit, incredible group that take pride in providing excellent service to their guests and creating an atmosphere that people continue to return to.

Face of the High Street: Lidia and Stacy - Zero Green

Celebrating their one-year anniversary this weekend, Lidia and Stacy, the team behind Zero Green on North Street, are almost in disbelief. Between the response from the community over the first year and the fact that an entire year has even gone by since their doors opened, it’s all a bit surreal.

The two met working together at the National Trust in Swindon and became great friends. After striving on their own to reduce their own plastic use, Lidia and Stacy saw an opportunity to go into business together.  Bristol was the perfect place for them to open the store and Bedminster couldn’t be happier to have them!

Specialising in foodstuffs like pasta, baking products, spices and coffee, and plastic free alternatives to everyday home products, Zero Green has filled a hole in the Bristol retail landscape that aims to provide the city with a solution to the single-use plastic problem that has caused such a strain on our environment.

For Lidia and Stacy, this year has been a real community effort and they’re proud to call Bedminster home. Local customers are getting involved too, offering handy-man services and other bits of their time as well as Bristol makers and artisans providing product to fill the shelves.

Birthday celebrations will go throughout the weekend of 8-9 March, revealing a renovated space that is more than ready to take on year two and beyond. Come by and celebrate, have some cake, and take home some new products that help you step even more towards a plastic-free future.

A Play in a Day: A midsummer night’s Dream (8-11yo, 12-16yo) @ Tobacco Factory Theatres

Kids will work as an ensemble and devise, direct and create a short performance that will be shared with family and friends and the end of the day. No previous experience required!

This walking theatre production will take you through Bedminster and into a few pubs along the way as you hear the fascinating tales each one has to tell including the gruesome fate of John Horwood: the man eaten by a lion and Bedminster’s own Romeo and Juliet.

 Swindle Live @ Fiddlers

Blending UK jazz, grime and hip hop with horns strings and beats, Swindle has no doubt found a sound that is all his own. After spending three years crafting his latest album and incorporating astonishing talent, Swindle has really set the bar for UK hip hop.

The Face of the High Street...Dan and Timo of Bikesmiths

The Bikesmiths workshop is nestled in a roller door garage off of North Street and if it weren’t for the A-frame sign with an arrow pointing you off the main road, you could very well miss it.

Dan brought Bikesmiths to this little shop in Southville almost two years ago. Before that, he was working out of his garage in Long Ashton and travelling to the Tobacco Factory Sunday Market tinkering with bikes and more importantly, helping people get to know how to tinker with their own.

Dan and Timo are long time friends with Timo joining the team in May of 2018. Since then, the shop has become a place to get your bikes fixed or rent a bench and learn how to fix your bike yourself. Dan and Timo offer it all from complete refurbishments to fixing a flat tyre as well as offering tuition courses on bike repair and selling the tools needed to do it.

The team also sells the children’s bike brand, Squish. As parents themselves, Dan and Timo understand that your little ones grow quickly and will buy back old bikes they’ve grown out of and put that money towards an upgrade.
